Surroundings
NatureThere are few large cities in the Netherlands which are so richly endowed with surrounding woods and nature areas as Breda. Whoever would like to momentarily exchange the murmurs of the city for the outdoor life can, in the vicinity of Breda, choose between Mastbos, Liesbos, Ulvenhoutse bos, Chaam, Strijbeek and Dorst; together totalling some 9,900 acres of woods and nature areas.

Cycling & Walking The Golden Tulip Mastbosch Hotel is situated in a large nature and wood area, magnificent surroundings in which to walk and cycle. There are various cycling routes posted with amusing and peculiar names such as the Smugglers route, Strawberry route and Market route. The Smugglers route leads you over the many smuggling paths between Holland and Belgium which were extensively used in former times. The strawberry route is a relaxed bicycle journey which you can now and then pause to taste this delightful fresh summer fruit. Also the kilometres long woods offer beautiful walking paths. The walks are indicated with signs from Staatsbosbeheer, the governmental organisation managing the natural heritage in the Netherlands, and vary from 2 and a half to 7 kilometres.

Playing woods for the children A specially appointed playing woods is within walking distance from the hotel. Here, children can to their hearts content climb trees, built huts, play with sand and much more. Deeper in the woods they can ogle the castle with moat and drawbridge and the witches circle.

Special gardens and parks Within walking distance from the hotel are the castle gardens of Bouvigne. You can visit these throughout the entire year and view different scenery according to the season. There are three different types of garden to be admired: a French, English and German garden. In the old inner city is the rustic Begijnhof, which was inhabited by real Beguines until 1990. In the herb garden you can find hundreds of different kinds of herbs. The gorgeous city park, the Valkenberg, which until 1812 served as castle garden for the gentry of Breda, is also definitely worth a visit.

The Galderse Moors The Galderse Moors recreational area, situated at only a few kilometres distance from the hotel, offers abundant possibilities in the summer for water sporter and sun worshippers.
The Inner-city of BredaIn the inner-city, there are many monuments such as the Grote of Onze Lieve Vrouwe Church, the Castle of Breda, the Begijnhofje, etc. To familiarise yourself with the most important historical spectacles, you can obtain a description of the historical kilometre from the VVV Tourist Office.

The shops and antique route The diversity of shops makes this route, which goes through the centre and the Ginneken area, extra pleasing. In the brochure, some 90 amusing, trendy and exceptional shops are described, including antique and curiosity shops. The route is obtainable from the VVV Tourist Office, Breda.

Museums Breda has a number of interesting museums, in particular Breda’s Museum where the history and culture of Breda can be viewed. For modern art, (graphical) design, photography and architecture, you can visit the Beyerd museum for expressive art. Here exhibitions are regularly held with an international effluence.

Going out Breda is a city in which to go out. Here you will find the wonderful Chassé Theatre and next to it the most beautiful Casino of the Netherlands. The city has a lively centre which is concentrated around the Grote Markt (Large Market) and the Havermarkt (Oat Market). Here you will find a diversity of cosy (dining) cafés, delightful bars, dance clubs, etc. Also, in the city area of Ginneken, there are numerous bars with charming terraces where it is pleasant to linger.

Events Besides being an historical, green and Bourgondian city, Breda is also an events city. Every year, numerous visitors make their way to Breda for a sportive, cultural or musical event. Take for example the traditional Carnival, the Jazz Festival or the renowned National Tattoo.
